Strech Out

Tell me things I don't know.
Say that when you are drinking
coffee, you are not drinking
you are lying.

Say that there is no tonight
because darkness died in a fire.

Or say that a flood engulfs
your city
every time you finish a book.

That when a girl leaves
the small town she grew up in,
she will find what she is
looking for, only
when she stops to take a rest.

Say that when you are writing
you are making love with dreams.

  1. There is the recurring theme of restlessness which I guess is present in every stanza. The image of a person lying while drinking coffee suggests an uncomfortable moment, that becomes an irony because when one drinks coffee, it should be relaxing. The absenc of "tonight" is limiting to the persona because it stops him from resting. The third stanza tries to demand the for rest, perhaps to balance the tone. There is the hidden wish for silence..of peace.. The last stanza is a very strong action of the imagination because there is a sudden drift from reality to dreams. It is in a way an escapist technique to get away and immediately forget something. Nice one!
